How long have you been a self-proclaimed baldie?
I've been bald since 2013. I love it! I didn’t expect to love it so much. I always wanted to do it.
Did anyone inspire you to cut your hair? (include @ name if possible):
What inspired me was my mother and my cousin Zoe. None of these ladies have social media unfortunately.
My mother had long beautiful hair my entire life then during my high school years she decided to do the big chop. Cut it all off. I remember thinking Wow she looks amazing! So I knew when I decided to do it I wouldn’t look crazy lol Then one of my younger cousins decided to do it right around the time I did mine, she look gorgeous. This just added to the inspiration.
What made you decide to cut your hair?
Well, during the time I was getting out of a relationship and I was getting so tired of the maintenance of my own long hair Ie relaxing ..relaxing my hair since I was 6 years old was starting to take its toll on my hair and scalp .. I knew I wanted to do the big chop just wasn’t confident.
So I had a half wig phase, stop wearing them then did pixie cuts, still relaxing my hair. I was starting to get real tired of my look and needed a change. So one day in June 2013, I was at one of my hair appointments. I told my hair dresser cut it all off. she was like are you sure? I was like Yes, im sure. Inside I was thinking oh my god what am I doing!!! this is going to be such a mistake! a variety of emotions was happening!
What reservations/fears did you have about cutting your hair?
My initial fear was oh my god what did I just do? I am going to regret this! I hope I don’t look absolutely ugly without hair!
How did you prepare yourself for your hair cut?
I think what prepared me was my mother having the confidence & courage to do it on herself years ago, she was my example
What was your initial reaction to seeing yourself with short hair?
When I saw my self without hair, I was like oh my gosh I did it. I felt joy, nervous, and new. Its truly indescribable.
Did cutting your hair symbolize anything to you?
Cutting my hair symbolized freedom, confidence and a new found beauty inside and outside..I feel more like me without hair, if that makes sense? lol
Do you plan on ever growing your hair back out?
I do not want hair anymore. I love to keep my hair low, like I hate when it starts growing out lol
Did cutting your hair hurt or help your self-confidence?
Of course at 1st it was an adjustment however my self confidence grew. I couldnt hide behind hair any longer. This is me at my natural state.
Cutting my hair has helped me discover alot about me as a beautiful black woman.
Honestly, I get more attention with no hair then I did with hair.
Do you regret your decision at all?
I do not regret my decision at all.
