How To Prepare For Your Haircut

So you think you want to cut your hair?

You are thinking about a decision that could possibly change your life. Scary, right? I know you have probably been taught your whole life how “important” your hair is to your image and what being “pretty” means. Well, I am glad you made your way to this platform. Here at The Baldie Revolution, hair does not equate to beauty, despite what typical beauty standards will have you believe. This is the first realization you must make when preparing for a haircut. If this is a mindset that unfortunately you have subscribed to, it is time to start looking outside of this ideal. We have gathered a few key tips to help you overcome your fears and gain enough courage to make that life changing decision.

  1. Follow Baldie Inspiration Pages

Seeing other beautiful baldie rocking their cuts will always be a great way to build up your courage. There is no “right” way to be a baldie as far as cuts or looks, so seeing the variety in the style can be very comforting. Of course follow our instagram and twitter (@thebaldierevolution and @thebaldierevolu) for inspiration and support, but there are so many other great pages to follow as well. @Baldgirlsdoitbetter, @thebaldiebabesofficial, and @baldandboujee are other great pages that also provide a community for women like us. Following this platform and others on social media will give you constant inspiration and constant reinforcement so that one of these days, the voice in your head telling you to cut your will be stronger than the one that telling you not to! Not to mention never ending support when you do decide to make the change happen!

2. Watch Big Chop videos on YouTube

This is one of the ways that I prepared for my haircut 3 years ago. I watched as many videos as I could find on YouTube about big chops. This was something that comforted me because I was able to get a non-biased perspective on the haircut from those who experienced it themselves. I cut my own hair so I looked for a lot of videos that featured the girl cutting her hair herself, but there are tons of barbershop videos as well for those not as brave (and reasonably so) as I was. Watching these videos allows you take inventory of all of things you may encounter or feel before, during, and after your big chop. This makes the experience more familiar and less scary than if you were going into it without knowing what to expect. We have added some of our favorite big chop videos to the website, click here to see them!

3. Cut hair shorter over time

This is a simple way to get more comfortable with short hair over time versus all at once. For me, I started my haircut journey with an undercut. Other women start with a short bomb, then a pixie cut, then a TWA, and so forth. By cutting your hair shorter over time, you are able to more easily adjust because sometimes a freshly shaved head can initially be a really big shock. Taking that change increments can make the experience more comfortable for you and maybe even convince you to go super short all at once!

4. Stop worrying about your head shape!

The number one reason I hear as to why a woman has not cut her hair yet is because she is thinks her head is shaped weird or too big. DON’T LET THIS STOP YOU! There is a haircut or style for every woman that can help accentuate your head shape. If you think you have a longer face, look for a tapered cut with curls on top. Rounder head shapes look great with a lower cut. Look for pictures of women with head shapes similar to yours and plan your haircut around those images. People told me that I had a weird shaped head before I cut my hair and now I always hear that I have the perfect head for a baldie - so moral of the story, just cut your hair!

In our Baldie Featured posts, we specifically ask baldies how they prepared for their haircut. Everyone prepares in a different way, some making an effort and some not.
