baldies: Jackie
What is your name?: Jackie
social media: @ayo_jackieeeee
How long have you been a self-proclaimed baldie?
A little over a month
Did anyone inspire you to cut your hair? (include @ name if possible):
@janaikirsten and @diaryofalamb both inspired me, not only that I could shave my head and still be confident and beautiful but also that I could play with colors.
What made you decide to cut your hair?
I had been thinking about it for years and never had the courage. One wash day I spent almost two hours blow drying my hair and I said “I can’t do this anymore”. I made my barbershop appointment the next day.
What reservations/fears did you have about cutting your hair?
That I would find out that my head shape was weird lol. But also how other people would react to it.
How did you prepare yourself for your hair cut?
I watched A LOT of YouTube videos, looked up cuts on Pinterest and looked through a lot of baldie ig pages. It helped me know what to expect and how I wanted my cut to look.
What was your initial reaction to seeing yourself with short hair?
I was numb and i actually acted like it never happened. But a couple days later when i washed it, I just kept running my hands over my head and it suddenly hit me that I was bald. I was shocked but i also felt incredibly liberated.
Did cutting your hair symbolize anything to you?
I’ve never had anything more than a trim done to my hair so to me, cutting my hair symbolized me accepting me for me and not hiding behind my braids or afro or however I styled my long hair. I wanted to feel free and liberated and this felt like the way to do it (and I was right)
Do you plan on ever growing your hair back out?
Not for a long time, if ever. I love the short cut way more than I thought i would.
Did cutting your hair hurt or help your self-confidence?
Helped it. Ironically, the less hair I have on my head, the better I feel.
Do you regret your decision at all?: Not one bit. This is probably the best decision I’ve ever made.
Were these questions difficult to answer?: NO
